Algaerefine

Collaborate with stakeholders on downstream processes towards value creation and
commercialization of bioproducts.

From Biomass to Ingredients

From lab to pilot scale, we design, develop and optimize downstream processes that
transform microalgae and seaweed biomass functional ingredients . Our goal is to aid
partners creating functional, scalable and cost-effective ingredients, really for commercial deployment.

Sustainability by design:

In the processes we develop, environmental and economic sustainability are always present. By using scalable technologies, mostly water-based processes and following the zero-waste approach, we aim to contribute to the development and commercialization of sustainable
bio-based ingredients.

From research to
scale-up, through process integration:

Not only do we bridge the gap between research and industry through pilot-scale validation
of downstream processing workflows, but also work towards integrating downstream processes with upstream cultivation, and with product formulation and end-user utilization. Our work-flows ensures process scalability, retention of functionality, and
alignment with the goals of the blue bioeconomy.

What we

can offer

We offer advanced services for processing biomass into high-value bio-based ingredients:

  • Pre-treatment: High-pressure homogenization, milling and enzymatic hydrolysis
  • Separation: Membrane filtration, centrifugation and solvent evaporation
  • Stabilization: Spray drying
  • Contract Research: Development of new processes and products, scale-up and scale-down validation, and unit operation optimization

The

Team

Led by Mariam Kholany and supported by a dynamic team including Bernardo Carvalho, Inês Guerra and Dylan de Kok, the Biorefinery group combines biotechnology, chemistry, and engineering expertise to develop sustainable and scalable algae-based processes.

ALGAEREFINE

Inside Our Lab

Our Lab / facility / platform combines advanced equipment and multidisciplinary expertise to process biomass at lab- and pilot-scales. It includes high-pressure homogenizers, extraction/hydrolysis stirred tanks, spray drier, evaporators, membrane filtrations units, and centrifuges, to achieve efficient disruption, extraction, separation and separation of algal ingredients using scalable technologies.
